April 2024 | Cooperative Celebrates Team SEMO, Streaming Taking Over Television Market

Posted: April 1, 2024 at 8 a.m.

April is recognized nationally as Lineworkers Appreciation Month, but we prefer to designate it as Utility Workers Appreciation Month. This acknowledges the collaborative effort needed to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity and broadband services.

Team SEMO is committed to making a positive impact at work, in our homes, and within the community. While you may spot our trucks or meet us in public, many might not be aware of the continuous safety and work training essential for our roles. Team SEMO, alongside our board members, engages in ongoing education, assessments, and often delivers reports. This is our commitment to accountability. I am grateful for Team SEMO’s daily efforts, contributing to a better southeast Missouri and beyond.

In late 2024 or early 2025, GoSEMO Fiber will discontinue linear TV services due to a lack of negotiating power compared to platforms like YouTube TV, making it challenging to maintain reasonable costs. Some broadcast fees are consistently increasing, ranging from 30 to 50 percent per year. Linear television, the traditional form of scheduled programming watched according to a fixed timetable, is rapidly losing ground to streaming. Streaming encompasses any media content, whether live or recorded, delivered via the internet to smart TVs, tablets, computers, and mobile devices. YouTube TV is an example of a streaming service with over eight million subscribers. The shift away from linear TV is evident as many professional sports teams and live games transition to streaming.

GoSEMO Fiber will focus on providing reliable fiber internet services, allowing you to stream content from platforms like YouTube TV, Netflix, DirecTV Stream, TikTok, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, etc. It’s important to note that you will still require GoSEMO Fiber’s internet package for streaming. Stay tuned for more information as we progress through 2024.
